Coaching is not just applicable to sports; it is just as important to be a coach to people in the workplace, OCBC Bank outgoing chief executive officer Helen Wong said.
She said coaching is a fundamental skill for leaders as they help staff acquire new skills and knowledge, as well as foster continuous development.
Ms Wong, 62, became OCBC’s first female group chief executive officer in April 2021 and will be passing the baton to her successor in September.
She said: “Coaching skills help you to communicate effectively, understand people better and build networks. Leaders who possess coaching skills can motivate and inspire their teams to reach new heights.”
NETWORKING IS KEY
“The moment you step out of Singapore... you will realise the power of networks, building the bridges.”
Manpower Minister Tan See Leng
She said leaders should be coaching across different business units and functions, rather than merely managing tasks or projects.
She added: “The world is becoming increasingly complex, and leaders need to be agile and adaptable. The ability to coach and mentor is relevant for all industries, not just banking.”
Ms Wong, who will remain as adviser to OCBC and non-executive director on the OCBC board, said the bank will continue its focus on talent development.
She said: “I am confident that with the right leadership and coaching, OCBC will continue to thrive and be an employer of choice for talent.”
